The United States has announced visa restrictions targeting certain South African nationals whom Washington says are responsible for, or involved in, implementing policies linked to uncompensated land seizures, alleged race-based discrimination or incitement of violence against racial or ethnic minorities.

According to the report, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measure on Tuesday, saying the South African government had not adequately addressed concerns previously raised by Washington.
“The South African government has not adequately addressed the previously laid out concerns,” Rubio was quoted as saying.
The policy is said to apply to individuals considered responsible for implementing laws or policies that U.S. authorities believe facilitate uncompensated land seizures or discriminatory treatment, as well as persons accused of inciting imminent violence against minority racial or ethnic groups.
No individuals affected by the visa restrictions were named in the announcement.
The development marks another point of disagreement between Washington and Pretoria over South Africa’s land reform programme, which is intended to address land ownership inequalities created during the apartheid era.
The Trump administration has repeatedly criticised aspects of the policy, arguing that some measures could unfairly affect white South Africans, particularly Afrikaners.
South Africa has rejected allegations of systematic persecution of white citizens and has maintained that its land reform measures are aimed at addressing historical inequalities within the framework of its Constitution and laws.
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government has also disputed claims of a so-called “white genocide,” arguing that South Africa’s high violent-crime rate affects communities across racial groups and that available official statistics do not establish a campaign of organised persecution against white South Africans.
The visa restrictions come amid broader tensions between the two countries. Washington has also criticised South Africa’s case against Israel before the International Court of Justice over the Gaza conflict, while the Trump administration has taken other steps affecting bilateral relations, including reductions in some forms of U.S. assistance and the admission of some Afrikaners to the United States under a refugee programme.
Pretoria has maintained that disagreements with Washington should be addressed through diplomatic engagement and has warned that allegations of racial persecution risk misrepresenting the country’s post-apartheid challenges.
More than three decades after the end of apartheid, South Africa continues to contend with significant disparities in land ownership, wealth, employment and access to economic opportunities, making land reform one of the country’s most politically sensitive policy questions.
