The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to abolish the twice-yearly changing of clocks and make daylight saving time permanent across most of the country.

The bill, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, was passed on Tuesday by a bipartisan vote of 308 to 117.

The measure will now proceed to the Senate for consideration. If approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Donald Trump, it would end the practice of moving clocks forward in spring and backward in autumn.

The proposed law would place most of the United States permanently on daylight saving time, giving Americans longer evening daylight throughout the year.

President Trump has backed the proposal, describing permanent daylight saving time as the more popular option.

“We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!” Trump had earlier written while supporting the measure.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Vern Buchanan, a Republican from Florida.

Supporters of the legislation argue that ending the seasonal clock changes would reduce disruption, improve quality of life, encourage outdoor activity and benefit some sectors of the economy.

They also say permanent daylight saving time could reduce accidents, workplace injuries and health problems associated with adjusting clocks twice a year.

However, the proposal remains controversial.

Opponents warn that permanent daylight saving time could lead to darker winter mornings in several parts of the country, with some areas potentially seeing sunrise after 9 a.m. during certain periods of the year.

Some lawmakers and medical groups have also argued that permanent standard time would be healthier because it aligns more closely with natural sleep patterns and the body’s circadian rhythm.

According to reports on the House-passed measure, the bill would allow some states to opt out and remain on permanent standard time.

Currently, most of the United States observes daylight saving time from March to November, while Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their clocks.

The House vote marks a major step in the long-running debate over whether the country should stop changing clocks twice every year.

A similar bill passed the Senate in 2022 but failed to become law after it stalled in the House.

This time, the measure has cleared the House and now awaits Senate action.

If the Senate approves the bill and Trump signs it into law, Americans in most states would no longer have to adjust their clocks twice each year.
