The Office of the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has issued an important notice requiring all Notaries Public in the country to immediately log into the official notary platform and update their details.

In a notice by Bridget Edokwe, Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, referring to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, all Notaries Public were instructed to visit https://notary.gov.ng and provide current information including their name, state of practice, office address, date sworn in, contact details, and legal mail. The update is necessary to facilitate the creation of an electronic register of notaries.

In a statement released by Chief Registrar Hajo Sarki Bello, it was noted that “All Notaries Public are urged to comply promptly with this Notice and ensure that information provided is accurate and complete.” Notaries were specifically requested to provide the following details:

1. File Number
2. SCN Number
3. First Name
4. Middle Name
5. Surname
6. State of Practice or Current State
7. Office Address
8. Date Sworn in
9. Phone Number
10. Legal mail

The creation of an electronic register is expected to modernize and streamline recordkeeping related to Notaries Public in Nigeria. An accurate database will allow the Office of the Chief Registrar to communicate more effectively with notaries and maintain oversight.

The notice set no specific deadline for notaries to complete the online update of their information. However, the strong wording urging immediate action and compliance suggests that Notaries Public should act without delay to fulfill this requirement from the Supreme Court registrar’s office. Failure to provide the requested details could potentially result in a notary being out of compliance with regulations.
