The Edo State Government has announced the immediate closure of all satellite campuses of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma. The directive, contained in a statement issued on February 11, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, mandates that all academic programmes and courses be conducted exclusively at the university’s main campus in Ekpoma.

The decision, according to the statement, aligns with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to improving the standards of the state-owned university. The government cited its significant investment in the institution as a key reason for the move, emphasizing the need to consolidate resources and ensure quality education delivery.

“In line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to raising the standard of Ambrose Alli University and the government’s significant investment in the institution, all satellite campuses operating outside the main campus are hereby shut down with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The university’s governing council and management have been instructed to ensure full compliance with the directive. The statement did not provide specific details on the number of satellite campuses affected or the timeline for relocating students and staff to the main campus.

Ambrose Alli University, established in 1981, has been a key institution in Edo State, offering a wide range of academic programmes. However, the proliferation of satellite campuses in recent years has raised concerns about the quality of education and the management of resources.

The closure of the satellite campuses is expected to streamline operations and allow the university to focus on enhancing infrastructure, faculty development, and academic excellence at the main campus.

While the government’s decision has been praised by some stakeholders as a step toward improving educational standards, others have expressed concerns about the potential impact on students and staff affiliated with the satellite campuses.

The Edo State Government has assured that measures will be put in place to ensure a smooth transition for affected students and staff. Further details on the implementation of the directive are expected to be released by the university’s management in the coming days.
