The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has extended warm felicitations to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as the latter prepares to host its 2025 Annual General Conference scheduled for August 22 to 29, 2025.

In an open goodwill message jointly signed by NLS President, Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, and General Secretary, Olasupo Ojo, Esq., and addressed to NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, the Society commended the NBA for its historic role in advancing justice, democracy, and good governance in Nigeria.

The statement described the NBA as a “steadfast guardian of legal heritage and a relentless advocate for the common good,” applauding its strides in judicial independence, digital transformation, expanded legal aid, and ethical standards.

“The NBA has not merely navigated the currents of change; it has harnessed them, transforming challenges into stepping stones for progress,” the NLS leaders noted.

Emphasizing the need for unity within the profession, the NLS expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with the NBA on legal reforms, policy advocacy, pro bono services, and public enlightenment. According to the Society, joint initiatives between the two bodies would strengthen the rule of law and better protect citizens’ rights.

“As a younger brother, the Nigerian Law Society looks to the NBA, our elder sibling, to seek a new reality of collaboration, cooperation, synergy, and harmonious professional courtesies,” the goodwill message read.

The NLS further highlighted examples from other jurisdictions where multiple legal bodies coexist and drive reform, citing South Africa, Namibia, the United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, India, and Japan as models worth emulating.

The message concluded with a call for the legal profession to remain united in defending human rights, advancing constitutionalism, and fostering a people-oriented democracy.

“Let us continue to build bridges, not walls; to illuminate paths, not obscure them; and to sow seeds of hope, not despair. For in every courtroom, legislative chamber, and community, our work echoes the very promise of a just society,” the NLS stated while wishing the NBA a successful 2025 Annual General Conference.
