In a notice on Friday, the management asked the students to vacate their hostels latest by Monday as a result of the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU). The strike began in November. “This is to inform all the students of the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, that the Management has directed that the hostel accommodation exercise should be suspended until further notice,” the notice read. “In light of the above, it has also directed that the Medical students’ hostel be closed and students should vacate their hostels latest by Monday, 4th February, 2019 in view of the ongoing ASUU strike.” ASUU and the federal government have been at loggerheads since the union commenced its strike action on November 14, 2018. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president, had said the strike was “indefinite and comprehensive” unless the federal government agrees to their demands. In January, Chris Ngige, minister of labour, had said the federal government had released N163 billion to universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) after a meeting with leaders of ASUU.
