Barely two weeks to the end of the tenure of the current vice chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sabastian Maimako, the Governing Council of the institution is yet to select a new person for the job.

The selection process for a new vice chancellor of the institution had in the last month generated heated accusations and counteraccusations from different groups.

Daily Trust reported how protests by staff and students of the university on the selection process led to the closure of the entrances of the institution, where both students and vehicles were prevented from going in, to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

Some of the protesters felt that the National Universities Commission (NUC) wanted to impose a candidate as the new vice chancellor, insisting that the process must be transparent.

Our correspondent gathered that other groups are insisting that the new vice chancellor must be an indigene of Plateau State.

Eighteen professors from all over the country applied for the job. After the process kicked off, the chairman of Council on the selection of the new vice chancellor, Tony Momoh, died, a development that brought confusion into the selection process.

The Council thereafter appointed an acting chairman, Mrs Mutbam, to conclude the process. A shortlist of 14 candidates was announced and an interview date set, but a day before the stated date, a directive from the NUC ordered the Council to suspend the process.

The tenure of the Council has since expired, which has further complicated issues, given the fact that it is the body empowered by law to superintend the process.
