The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Banku Obi, has said that the institution will not allow itself to be dragged into Nigeria’s politics.

Obi, who spoke on Thursday during Arise Television’s Morning Show programme, maintained that UNICAL management visited Justice Emmanuel Agim, a distinguished alumnus of the university, independent of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

The clarification comes after reports suggested that Justice Agim accompanied Wike to a convocation ceremony at the University of Calabar.

The Supreme Court had also clarified that Agim attended the event as an honouree and alumnus, having been deemed worthy by the university’s Governing Council to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law.

Speaking about the controversy the matter generated, the VC stated that both individuals attended in their personal capacities.

She noted that the seating arrangement was specifically reserved for awardees.

Obi said: “We refuse to let the politics of the day overshadow the landmark achievements of our 50-year celebration.

“We visited Justice Agim, a distinguished alumnus of the university, independent of the FCT Minister. Both individuals attended in their personal capacities, and the seating arrangement was specifically reserved for awardees.”
