The UK’s Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey MP, has arrived in Nigeria this week for a crucial series of meetings with top defense leaders and military chiefs.

The primary objectives of his visit are to strengthen defense cooperation between the two nations and engage in discussions about the situation in Niger.

During his visit, Minister Heappey engaged with senior leaders within the Nigerian Ministry of Defence on Wednesday. His agenda also included meetings with the Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff, key figures in Nigeria’s defense landscape. Additionally, he had a significant meeting with the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission. During this session, he reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for ECOWAS’ ongoing diplomatic endeavors aimed at facilitating a peaceful return to democracy in Niger.

Reflecting on his visit, Defence Minister James Heappey MP expressed his satisfaction at returning to Nigeria for the third time in three years. He underscored the enduring partnership between the UK and Nigerian armed forces. This partnership is pivotal in jointly addressing challenges posed by violent extremism and other security threats, particularly in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.

Heappey reiterated the UK’s endorsement of ECOWAS’ call for the peaceful restoration of constitutional order and democracy in Niger. He emphasized that the UK is committed to collaborating with ECOWAS and other regional partners in West Africa to advance this crucial objective.

The alliance between the UK and Nigeria spans a profound and longstanding security and defense relationship. This partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to promoting regional and international peace and security. One of the focal points of this collaboration involves UK support for the Nigerian Armed Forces. This assistance focuses on bolstering Nigerian capabilities to effectively address security threats and maintain stability.

Nigeria’s role in enhancing regional security and combating violent extremism in West Africa, particularly within the Lake Chad Basin, is indispensable. The Nigerian Armed Forces play a pivotal role as a key contributor to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a testament to the collective determination of its member nations to uphold security in the region.

In light of the ongoing political situation, the UK stands with Nigeria’s diplomatic mediation efforts aimed at restoring democracy in Niger through its ECOWAS membership. The UK vehemently condemns the ongoing coup against Niger’s duly elected leadership. The UK expresses solidarity with ECOWAS in denouncing the unlawful detention of President Mohamed Bazoum, his family, government officials, and the unacceptable conditions of their confinement. The UK fervently calls for their immediate release.
