Matt Hancock’s tenure as British health minister came to an end on Saturday after resigning in the face of mounting pressure over his relationship with his married female aide.
Hancock was caught kissing the Ms Coladangelo in his ministerial office in a breach of coronavirus restrictions.
Video footage of the pair kissing had emerged with several newspapers splashing the story and photograph on their covers.
The politician similarly walked out of his 15-year-marriage.
He told his wife, Martha, on Thursday hours before the story hit the newsstands that he was leaving.
Hancock in his resignation letter which he submitted to Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Government “owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest.”
“Those of us who make these rules have got to stick by them”, he added.
But Boris said he was sorry to receive Hancock’s resignation letter.
He told him: “You should be proud of what you’ve achieved”
Ex-chancellor and home secretary Sajid Javid was immediately announced as Hancock’s replacement.
The London Mail, quoting friends of the pair, said they had been seeing each other for around six weeks, but were a ‘love match’.
In a video announcing his resignation, Mr Hancock said: “The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.
“I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need (to) be with my children at this time.”
