In a renewed effort to bring stability to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have appointed former leaders from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria to lead peace efforts in the conflict-ridden eastern region.

The newly designated facilitators—former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo—will oversee the peace process aimed at halting the intensifying violence in eastern DRC.

The decision comes after a February 8 summit where both regional blocs agreed to merge the Luanda and Nairobi peace initiatives, which had been operating separately before the latest surge in hostilities. The move underscores a coordinated African-led effort to address the escalating crisis, particularly the territorial advances made by the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group, which has caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

In a joint statement released late Monday, the EAC and SADC outlined their immediate priorities, including:

  • An immediate and unconditional ceasefire to halt further violence.
  • Unhindered humanitarian access to assist displaced civilians.
  • Securing Goma’s airport, a strategic point that has been threatened by the conflict.

To further solidify these efforts, a ministerial meeting is scheduled for Friday to finalize the ceasefire framework and discuss the next steps in implementing a lasting peace strategy.

Despite the February 8 summit’s call for a ceasefire, fighting has persisted, emphasizing the urgent need for stronger mediation efforts.
