The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike, directing all its members across the country to withdraw their services effective midnight Sunday.

Announcing the industrial action at a press conference held at the union’s national secretariat, University of Abuja, ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, said the strike would serve as a window for the federal government to conclude ongoing negotiations with the union.
According to him, the decision followed the government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting public universities despite repeated appeals and extended deadlines.
“The problem with this government is that they are slow in responding to our demands. When we were about to embark on strike action, we went for a meeting in Sokoto and they gave us three weeks, which we accepted,” Piwuna said. “During those three weeks, we never heard a word from them until the time had elapsed.”
Piwuna explained that the strike, which begins on October 13, would be observed across all ASUU branches nationwide. He accused the government of insincerity in its approach to implementing agreements reached with the union, including funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, and improved welfare for lecturers.
He said the union’s patience had been stretched thin by repeated unfulfilled promises and government delays in addressing the lingering challenges confronting the education sector.
On October 8, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had appealed to ASUU to shelve its planned strike, assuring that negotiations with aggrieved unions in the tertiary education sector were nearing conclusion.
However, Piwuna said the government’s intervention came too late, insisting that the strike would proceed as scheduled unless concrete steps were taken to meet the union’s demands.
He added that the two-week warning strike was not intended to disrupt the academic calendar but to compel the government to take decisive action toward resolving the issues once and for all.
