Daily Law Tips (Tip 410) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

TWO PERSONS THAT MUST REPORT EVERY ARREST MADE IN NIGERIA TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION.

Every quarter in a year, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on one hand and the other heads of every other security agency in Nigeria on the other hand, must send their separate reports on record of all arrests made in Nigeria with or without warrant in relation to federal offences in any part of Nigeria.

The reports must be submitted to the Attorney General of the Federation.

The reports must contain full particulars of the arrested persons showing; alleged offence, date and circumstances of arrest, full name, occupation and residential address as well as height, photograph, full fingerprint impressions and any other means of identification.

Note that failure to comply or discharge responsibility without reasonable cause must be treated as misconduct by the appropriate authority.

My authorities are sections 15, 29(1), 491, 494 and 495 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and other similar laws across States in Nigeria.
