Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has stepped down from his role in the administration of Bola Tinubu, a move widely seen as preparation for a run in the 2027 Bauchi State governorship race.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that Tuggar submitted his resignation around midday on Monday. The decision follows a presidential directive requiring all political appointees intending to seek elective positions to vacate their posts before the March 31, 2026 deadline.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Tuggar’s resignation clears the way for his anticipated candidacy in Bauchi State’s next governorship election.

Political analysts suggest the timing of his exit is deliberate, positioning him to pursue the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The directive mandating these resignations applies broadly across government, including ministers, advisers, assistants, and heads of federal agencies. It aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of party primaries for the 2027 general elections.

With the deadline fast approaching, more resignations are expected as affected officials comply with the requirement to participate in the upcoming electoral cycle.
