The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has appointed renowned legal scholar, Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, as its 16th Vice-Chancellor following the ratification of his selection by the University’s Governing Council on Sunday.
A statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Inya Agha Egwu, confirmed that the appointment followed a transparent, merit-based selection process chaired by the Chairman of the Council, Engr. Kayode Ojo.
Professor Ortuanya, a Professor of Law at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), previously served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law, UNN Enugu Campus, and currently holds a position as a visiting scholar at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Beyond academia, Ortuanya brings extensive public service experience to the role, having served as Secretary to the Enugu State Government and Commissioner for Education in Enugu State.
“His deep understanding of university governance, policy, and law, as well as his extensive leadership experience, will significantly advance the mission and vision of Nigeria’s premier university over the next five years,” the statement read.
The University Community congratulated Professor Ortuanya and expressed confidence that his leadership will usher in a new era of academic excellence, innovation, and transformation at UNN.
Ortuanya succeeds Prof. Charles Igwe, whose five-year tenure ends later this year.
