Zaria, Kaduna State – In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a mosque collapsed in the Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, resulting in the loss of eight lives and leaving seven others injured. The calamity occurred on Friday during the Asr prayer, a time of religious observance, around 4 pm.

Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, the Emir of Zazzau, confirmed the heart-wrenching event, disclosing that the collapse happened while worshipers were engaged in prayer within the mosque premises. The catastrophe was particularly tragic as there had been prior indications of structural issues.

Reportedly, a crack in the mosque’s wall had been noticed a day before the incident occurred. Concerned individuals and civil engineers were actively working to address the problem and conduct repairs. Despite these ongoing efforts, the mosque’s structure ultimately gave way.

The toll of casualties has been deeply distressing, with the number of fatalities escalating from an initial four to a tragic total of eight. In addition to the eight fatalities, seven individuals were injured in the incident. It has been revealed that many of the injuries resulted from a stampede triggered by the sudden collapse rather than the actual building’s impact.

Mallam Ibrahim Mohammed, one of the victims who suffered injuries, recounted the chaotic scene. He shared that he was pushed to the ground amidst the turmoil, and the injuries he sustained were a result of the ensuing stampede.

Community member Sani Salisu, a regular worshipper at the mosque, reported that a pillar within the mosque had been showing signs of leakage for nearly five days, following heavy rainfall. The combination of structural vulnerability and the recent torrential rain likely contributed to the mosque’s collapse.

The Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. He confirmed that the crack in the mosque’s wall had been acknowledged the day before the incident and that repair measures were being organized. He regretfully stated that the collapse occurred before these repairs could be carried out.

As a precautionary step, the emir instructed that prayers should be conducted outside the mosque premises while repair work is undertaken. Furthermore, he directed that a funeral prayer for the deceased victims would be held at his palace at 8:30 pm on the same day. The community mourns the tragic loss of lives and the heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the region.
