Former Nigerian Bar Association presidential candidate, Tobenna Erojikwe, has endorsed Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, for the office of President of the Nigerian Bar Association in the 2026 elections.

Erojikwe said his experience as a former contestant for the NBA presidency had given him a clear understanding of the demands of the office, including clarity of thought, disciplined execution, independence of mind and the stamina required to serve lawyers across more than 128 branches of the Association.

According to him, having assessed the current candidates, Akangbe stands out as the person with the capacity to lead the NBA through its present challenges and into a stronger future.

“That person, in my considered opinion, is Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN,” he said.

Erojikwe said he had worked closely with Akangbe over the years, including when he served as Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch Continuing Legal Education and Mentorship Committee, where Akangbe was a member and made valuable contributions.

He also recalled working with Akangbe during his tenure as Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, serving as a co-opted member of his Executive Committee and as Chairman of the Branch’s Continuing Professional Development Committee.

Erojikwe said what distinguished Akangbe’s leadership was his clarity of vision, disciplined execution and commitment to service.

He noted that from the beginning of his administration as NBA Lagos Branch Chairman, Akangbe set clear timelines for achieving his objectives and remained focused on delivering measurable results.

According to him, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Akangbe kept the branch active by introducing virtual meetings and other innovative engagement platforms.

He said Akangbe also mobilised public-spirited members of the branch to fund a palliative programme through which food supplies and financial assistance were provided to lawyers who needed support during the pandemic.

Erojikwe further said that within his first 100 days in office, Akangbe had established an affordable health insurance scheme for members, created strategic partnerships with professional bodies for training and certification opportunities, secured sponsorship for 100 members of the branch to obtain Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and established the branch’s Remuneration Committee.

He said Akangbe’s record matters because the NBA presidency is not a learning opportunity, but a two-year mandate requiring a leader who can build systems, deliver programmes, manage crises and produce results within defined timelines.

“There are candidates in this election who speak compellingly about what they will do. Yemi is the candidate who has already done it. The difference between a vision and a track record is the difference between a promise and a receipt. Yemi Akangbe comes with receipts,” Erojikwe said.

He also said he had studied Akangbe’s manifesto and was satisfied that it was serious, implementable and grounded in the real needs of Nigerian lawyers.

Erojikwe specifically praised Akangbe’s digital transformation agenda, including the proposed NBA One platform and e-Remuneration system, describing them as practical, phased and built on existing NBA infrastructure.

He also commended Akangbe’s commitments on a living wage for young lawyers, reintroduction of an access-to-finance scheme, expansion of health insurance and protection of lawyers’ livelihoods against professional encroachment.

According to him, those proposals reflect the same philosophy that guided Akangbe’s initiatives at the NBA Lagos Branch, where member welfare was treated not as a talking point but as a deliverable.

Erojikwe said he was endorsing Akangbe because of his demonstrable capacity, practical leadership, unblemished record of service and the seriousness of his programme for the national Association.

“I put my name behind his because I have seen what he builds when given responsibility. I trust him to build the Bar that every Nigerian lawyer deserves,” he said.
