A business leader Chief Fred Owate has accused lawyer Amaka Udeh of defamation, invasion of privacy, misuse of private information, breach of confidentiality, and cyberbullying. The allegations, outlined in a legal demand letter from Yellow Silk Attorneys dated 16 October 2024, stem from Udeh’s alleged secret recording and subsequent publication of a private conversation with Chief Owate on various social media platforms.

According to the letter, the posts titled “How Nigerian Men Move to Lawyers in Court” and “Between a Lawyer and her Male Admirer” have gone viral, garnering over 700,000 views and 2 million impressions across platforms such as Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook. The widespread circulation of the posts has allegedly caused significant damage to Chief Owate’s reputation, leading to ridicule, embarrassment, and emotional distress.

Yellow Silk Attorneys assert that Chief Owate sought legal representation from Udeh in good faith, stating, “I don’t want anything that can drag me…just need someone to give me guidelines.” However, the letter claims that despite acknowledging his request for legal services, Udeh breached his trust by publishing the private conversation without his consent.

In addition to the previously highlighted violations, the legal demand letter further accuses Udeh of misuse of private information and breach of confidentiality. As a lawyer, Udeh is bound by the principles of confidentiality, and the publication of the private conversation without Chief Owate’s consent is considered a clear misuse of private information and a violation of the trust placed in her.

In light of these allegations, Yellow Silk Attorneys are demanding a public video apology from Udeh on all platforms where the defamatory content was shared, apologies from all individuals and entities that shared the content, permanent removal of the video from all channels, and payment of damages amounting to ₦200,000,000 (Two Hundred Million Naira) for the irreparable harm caused to Chief Owate’s reputation, business relationships, and emotional well-being.

The letter, signed by Uzoma Jimrex Okeke, Esq. AIC, Partner Attorney at Yellow Silk Attorneys, warns that failure to meet these demands within 24 hours will result in legal action against Udeh for defamation, breach of privacy, misuse of private information, breach of confidence, and violations of the Cybercrimes Act and the Nigerian Data Protection Act. The law firm also threatens to seek injunctive relief and file a complaint with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.

As of the time of reporting, Amaka Udeh and AELEX Legal have not issued any public statements regarding the allegations.
