The Publicity Secretary NBA Young Lawyers Forum, Effurun, Delta State, Hon. Michael Hephzibah Sekoya, has called for a review of the remuneration of young lawyers to protect the prestige of the Association

Sekoyah who is a Musician, Writer, and Founder of NLS SPLASH & Justice Cloaks Chambers, said lawyers are underpaid despite the hardship they underwent in both universities and the law school

“The remuneration of young lawyers in Nigeria needs serious attention, as part of the need to keep the prestige of the legal profession. The Legal Profession stands as the most lucrative form of business in the world and her members increase every day

“Large scale of young lawyers are underpaid and they suffer severe hardships in the course of their pupillage at some firms. It’s quite disheartening that despite several nights, cold and hot season of preparing for exams at the University and Law School and spending a lot” he tweeted

He lamented that some young lawyers receive below N50, 000 as remuneration. According to him, the meager amount can lead them to engage in unprofessional acts.

He said, “Young lawyers are being paid below #50,000 naira in some firms. The Profession is indeed a noble one and it’s one of the most respected professions in the world. Let’s increase the welfare of Young Lawyers through remuneration and make the world a better place.

“The effect of poor remuneration can encourage young lawyers into unprofessional acts which can undermine the integrity of the profession.”

Furthermore, Sekoya said parents are disappointed in the amount received by young lawyers and they feel discouraged to send their children to school.

“A lawyer is worth more than gold and silver. Our parents feel so disappointed in the remuneration and they are also discouraged to send others to University due to the poor remuneration. The total amount spent by some parents on a law student prior to his call to Bar is enough to buy land at Banana Island. Let’s resolve this issue. I believe in this administration.”
