President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to approve an increase in the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.

The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session. According to the letter, the proposed budget increase is backed by additional revenues from various government agencies, including:

  • N1.4 trillion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)
  • N1.2 trillion from the Nigeria Customs Service
  • N1.8 trillion from other government-owned agencies

Following the presentation of the request, Senate President Akpabio referred it to the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriations for immediate review. He assured that the budget deliberation would be finalized and passed before the end of February.

The proposed increase reflects the administration’s effort to align fiscal projections with revenue inflows, ensuring adequate funding for national development initiatives in 2025.
