President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
The renaming was formally announced Thursday evening during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to pay tribute to the former Nigerian leader.
“Before we take the prayers in honour of his [Buhari’s] memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded) can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu said, drawing applause from the gathering, which included ministers who served under Buhari and his son, Yusuf Buhari.
The commemorative meeting the first of its kind since Tinubu assumed office in 2023 brought together leaders from the three arms of government, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, serving ministers, and members of the late President’s family.
According to the official programme, tributes were delivered in sequence by prominent government officials, including Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate, Budget Minister Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Works Minister David Umahi, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, and Women Affairs Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. Yusuf Buhari, representing the family, gave the final tribute.
The solemn event followed three days of national mourning declared by the President, during which flags were flown at half-mast across the country. A planned cabinet tribute originally scheduled for Tuesday was postponed to allow Tinubu and other senior officials to attend Buhari’s burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The former President died in a London hospital after a prolonged illness, according to a statement from the Presidency. His body was flown back to Nigeria and buried on July 15 with full military honours and Islamic rites.
In his earlier condolence message, Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier and a statesman,” who dedicated his life to the service of the nation and upheld the values of duty, honour, and national unity.
