President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education in Kano to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, in honour of the late statesman and diplomat.

Announcing the decision on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the move is aimed at immortalising Sule’s contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development.

Tinubu believed that honoring the late diplomat’s legacy will serve as an inspiration for younger generations to uphold values of integrity, patriotism, and national service.

Sule, who lived from 1929 to 2017, was a prominent political figure and diplomat.

He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.

His political career also included roles as Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), Minister of Mines and Power, and the country’s first Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints in 1976.

The Federal University of Education, Kano, was initially established by the Kano State Government before its transition to a federal institution.

It is one of seven specialised universities of education under the Federal gyovernment, playing a crucial role in training teachers and strengthening the education sector.
