The Presidency has clarified that former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, resigned from office and were not sacked.

In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Edun stepped down citing health reasons.

According to the statement, Edun “duly tendered his resignation from office, citing health reasons, before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his replacement.”

Onanuga disclosed that Edun, who turned 70 on Monday, submitted his resignation on his birthday and expressed gratitude to the President.

“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Edun wrote in his resignation letter.

He added, “Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”

The statement further noted that Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa before his exit and later left to focus on his private business interests.

Similarly, the Presidency said Dangiwa also resigned from his position and thanked the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to both former ministers for their contributions to the administration.

The President “expressed deep appreciation to Edun and Dangiwa for their dedicated service and significant contributions to the administration’s economic reform programme,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Tinubu has tasked the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to build on ongoing reforms.

He urged Oyedele to “consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the administration’s fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation.”

The President is also expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma as Minister of Housing to the Senate for confirmation.
