Daily Law Tips (Tip 416) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)
THERE ARE NO MORE PRISONS, PRISON YARDS AND PRISON OFFICERS IN NIGERIA.
By a new law (Nigerian Correctional Services Act, 2019), the Prisons Act has been repealed (abolished). There are no more prisons, prison yard, prisons services and prison officers in any part of Nigeria. Rather, the new law established the Nigerian Correctional Service to offer and superintend over custodial and non-custodial services in all parts of Nigeria. Hence, former Nigerian Prisons Service is now Nigerian Correctional Service and it is headed by the Comptroller General of Nigerian Correctional Service. And, prisons are now known as “Custodial Centers/Correctional Center”.
My authorities are sections 1, 9, 46 and 47 of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
