Chief Emeka Obegolu gave the opening remark in which he emphasized what Mediation entails. In his remark, he said: “The practice of Mediation is a conviction and the practice that requires selflessness and humility …Mediation is a dispute resolution mechanism in a spectrum that includes formal and informal adjudicatory processes, and retributive self-help orientations. Adjudication allows third party to decide and give a binding decision that would end a dispute.” According to Chief Emeka a mediator is limited in adherence to only those rules he/she selects and allows to govern the mediation process. The mediator is continuously forced to depend on his/her intuition and prior knowledge of human nature and subject matter to guide the process. Speaking further he said: “Once your conviction brings you to mediation, learning how to conduct a mediation session becomes routine. It becomes a routine that builds seamlessly into habits which your nature has already established.” On the overview of mediation and mediation practice in Nigeria anchored by ICMC Registrar, Mr. Segun Ogunyannwo and the former president of ICMC and former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja branch, Mr. Elachi Agada respectively gave a brief history of the Institute to justify the overview. Mr Elachi also spoke on how one can become a member of ICMC, the various training content and the components of Mediation. Dr. Paddy Kemdi Njoku on the other had stated that disputes are part of human nature and the conflict resolution mechanism which include Litigation, Mediation, Evaluation, Early neutral, Arbitration Med-arb and Conciliation and it is becoming more and more glaring that indigenous diseases need indigenous therapies for effective therapy. According to him, for conflicts to be resolved, an adoption of multi-track approach has to be embraced to effectively curb or put to rest conflicts. He further outlined the benefits or advantages of conflict resolution mechanisms. According to him, Conflict resolution lessens destructive and unproductive fighting; does not remove diversity; it restores natural trust which has broken down. Also, it focuses on Issues not personalities, it manages egos and emotions as well; it uses age-old respected means of social communication, and references historical and cultural links. Dr Paddy also stated that his Mediation stories used in resolving disputes in Traditional African Societies are found in the book titled ‘Omenuko’ written by Nwana. ]]>
