*Urged Nigerian Govt To Start Taking Obvious Steps And Giant Strides At Developing The Industry

The Legal Business Conference 2021 organized by the Legal Business Network and which held on May 18, 2021 at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Victoria Island, Lagos addressed some critical law and business issues in the entertainment industry.

As entertainment law cannot be discussed without the topic of intellectual property and its protection, a lot of discussions were made on the intellectual property of entertainment industry players and the laws protecting it.

The role of the judiciary in implementing these laws was also analysed and it was noted that the Nigerian Judiciary needs to do better in terms of swiftness in the administration of justice and also that the Judges must have a proper knowledge of the industry and the laws governing it. There is need to also revise our laws and update them to the standard of the contemporary times.

Experts warned that intellectual property has no value until it is exploited and once exploited, it must be protected by necessary registration and publication. Registration of intellectual property is not enough; a public notice should be published to inform the public that a body of art is the entertainer’s intellectual property.

Industry players should stop glossing over infringements of intellectual property; every infringement on their right should be challenged, but they should also be careful not to infringe on the rights of others, no matter how minor.

The entertainment industry in Nigeria, if well developed, is capable of replacing oil and gas as the major economic base of the country.

Hence, the Nigerian government should stop paying lip service to the development needed and start taking obvious steps and giant strides at developing the industry by providing a conducive environment and the infrastructure needed for the industry to thrive.
