Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb(UK), has extended warm congratulations to the leadership and members of the NBA Ikeja Branch on the occasion of their 2025 Annual Law Week.

In a congratulatory message titled “Preserving the Legal Profession for Tomorrow,” Akangbe praised the Branch Executive Committee and Planning Committee for selecting a theme he described as both “timely” and “absolutely necessary.”

“To truly safeguard the future of our noble profession, we must start confronting a few hard truths,” he said.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria outlined four critical areas of concern that he believes must be addressed to ensure the legal profession remains vibrant and relevant for the next generation:

  1. Fair Remuneration for Young Lawyers: He emphasized the need for better compensation structures to support upcoming legal professionals.
  2. Embracing Technology: Akangbe stressed that the justice delivery system must modernize by integrating technology to ensure speed and efficiency.
  3. Funding the Bar Independently: He warned against over-reliance on the executive arm of government for funding, which he said compromises the Bar’s independence.
  4. Accountability Within the Profession: He called for the sanctioning of lawyers who enable the delay of justice, noting that such practices erode public trust.

“The future won’t preserve itself — it’s on us. And conversations like the ones you’re hosting this week are a step in the right direction,” Akangbe stated, commending NBA Ikeja for its consistent leadership and advocacy within the legal community.

He concluded by wishing the branch a successful and impactful Law Week celebration.
