American rapper Rick Ross has been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, over an alleged domestic violence incident in which a woman accused him of slapping, choking and assaulting her during an argument.

Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts, was taken into custody by Miami Beach police early Thursday and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre at about 6:10 a.m., according to Miami-Dade jail and court records.

The 50-year-old rapper is facing one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. Both charges have been classified as domestic violence.

The allegations stem from an encounter involving a woman who told investigators that she had been in a relationship with Ross for about a year.

According to an arrest affidavit cited in reports, the woman said the confrontation began after Ross discovered that she had been tagged in a photograph on Instagram.

She alleged that the rapper became angry over the photograph, questioned her about it and accused her of being romantically involved with another man.

The woman told police that Ross slapped her in the face before continuing to question her while she was in the bathroom.

She further alleged that he struck her several times in the chest and then grabbed the collar of her hoodie, twisting it around her neck until she was unable to breathe.

According to her account to investigators, Ross also grabbed her by the ponytail and slammed her against a wall.

She alleged that while she was bent over, he struck her in the face, causing an injury to her lip.

The woman further told police that Ross pushed her to the floor, turned on the shower and attempted to spray her with the showerhead.

The allegations remain unproven and will be tested through the criminal justice process.

Ross’ lawyer, Bradley Horenstein, has strongly denied the accusations and asked members of the public not to reach conclusions before the case is heard.

“All I can say is that the allegations are false. He’s innocent. Everything is going to come out,” Horenstein said.

“We just ask that you allow the process to play out before rushing to judgment, because the truth will come in.”

Court records reportedly show that Ross’ bond was set at $5,000 on the felony battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 on the misdemeanor battery charge, bringing the total bond to $6,000.

His arraignment is scheduled for October 22.

The arrest comes only days after Ross’ former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, publicly accused him of physically abusing her.

Kendrick made the allegations in a series of Instagram posts in which she claimed Ross injured her lip during an incident she said occurred about a month earlier.

She also shared photographs which she said showed the injury and alleged that she ended the relationship afterwards.

Kendrick further described the way she said she had been treated during the relationship as being used like a “punching bag.”

There is, however, no confirmation at this stage that Kendrick is the woman involved in the criminal complaint that led to Ross’ arrest.

Authorities have also not publicly confirmed the identity of the alleged victim in the present case.

That distinction remains important because the allegations posted online by Kendrick and the criminal charges now before authorities may relate to separate incidents.
