Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb, called on his colleagues to remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and the rule of law despite the challenges currently facing Nigeria.

In a heartfelt address shared with senior legal professionals and colleagues, Akangbe remarked, “As Christians across the globe mark the sacred occasion of Easter—the Resurrection Day—we are reminded of the profound truth that, even in our darkest moments, life and hope have a remarkable way of breaking through.”

Akangbe, acknowledging the national struggles of insecurity, economic inflation, and the erosion of constitutional values, emphasized the importance of resilience. He stated, “At this point in our national journey, the Nigerian state—and, by extension, our legal system—is encumbered by forces that threaten the very soul of our constitutional democracy: injustice, insecurity, economic inflation, institutional decay, and a troubling erosion of the rule of law.”

Despite these daunting challenges, Akangbe expressed an unwavering belief in the ability of Nigeria and the legal profession to overcome adversity. He drew inspiration from the resurrection, likening it to the hope that can emerge even from difficult circumstances: “But just as the Resurrection emerged from Golgotha’s gloom, I hold, with unshaken conviction, that the adversities before us shall not have the final word. We must, as custodians of justice, hold steadfast to the ideals of equity, moral courage, and constitutional integrity.”

As the nation faces its current trials, Akangbe called for renewed faith in both Nigeria’s future and the legal profession’s vital role in shaping it. “Let Easter stir in us the courage to believe again—in our nation and in our noble calling.”

He concluded his message by wishing all his colleagues and their families a reflective, peaceful, and uplifting Easter celebration.
