Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined €255 and suspended for 30 days by the Portuguese Football Federation following his decision to leave Portugal’s national team camp in Copenhagen during the September international window.

The 41-year-old forward left the camp on September 30, a day before Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark, prompting disciplinary proceedings by the Portuguese Football Federation.

The Federation’s Disciplinary Council has now found the Portugal captain guilty of an intentional disciplinary offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations and imposed a 30-day suspension alongside a fine of €255.

According to the disciplinary decision, the accusation against Ronaldo was found to be justified, resulting in the suspension and financial penalty.

The punishment followed an investigation opened after Ronaldo walked out of the national team camp amid tensions with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, despite warming up during the match. He subsequently left the camp three days later after further developments concerning his role in the squad.

The Portuguese Football Federation initially placed him under preventive suspension while its disciplinary authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Under the Federation’s disciplinary regulations, a player who leaves or fails to report for national team training, matches or other official activities without justification can face suspension and a fine.

Ronaldo later publicly apologised to his teammates and supporters over his decision to leave the camp, while explaining that the episode followed what he regarded as a breakdown of trust with the national team coach. He nevertheless indicated that he remained available to represent Portugal and would accept disciplinary consequences arising from his conduct.

The final sanction is considerably lighter than the maximum punishment Ronaldo could have faced under the regulations, which provided for a suspension of up to six months in circumstances involving an unjustified departure from national team duties.
