Segun Ogunyannwo has responded to the wanted notice circulating against him in connection with a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stating in a video message that the document is a forgery, that he honoured the Commission’s invitation and was released on self recognisance, and that he has been asked to file his own petition against the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC).

Speaking directly to camera from what he described as his office, Ogunyannwo addressed himself to aspirants to the Nigerian Bar and to those who had contacted him since the notice began to circulate.
He opened by acknowledging the publication. “Greetings, your Excellencies, highly esteemed aspirants to the Nigerian Bar. You are great people, and I appreciate you,” he said. “You must have seen posts emanating from the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators declaring me wanted.”
He thanked those who had reached out. “People have called me from all over the world and sent messages. Thank you for your kind and loving concern.”
Ogunyannwo said he attended the Commission when invited. “I actually received an invitation from the EFCC, [on a petition] treated by ICMC. So I went. I wrote down my statement. When I was done, I was asked to leave on self recognisance.”

He said he had also spoken publicly earlier in the day. “This morning I was on the Human Rights Radio and TV station, for the whole world to know that I am okay. Nobody is looking for me.”
The central claim in the video is that the wanted notice is not a genuine document of the Commission.
“The sad part is that when I reached out to the EFCC, they asked me to send a petition. They are starting a serious investigation into ICMC for forgery and impersonation. That document did not emanate from the EFCC. It was forged.”
He urged those who received the notice to verify it themselves rather than take his word. “There is a phone number there and a name. Please, I don’t want all of you to call. Just assign one person to reach out to that person. You will be shocked that lawyers go to the extreme. Being involved in forgery and impersonation is a shame.”
He repeated the point later. “So you can check the website of the EFCC. You will not find it there. And that name they put, and phone number, let one of you reach out to that person and then announce on your platform the result you got.”
Ogunyannwo said he understood what lay behind the publication, pointing to induction figures.
“I know the source of this. On the 6th of July, we inducted 1,383 students. ICMC inducted less than 50. So, the thing, I understand. But that does not give you licence to now become unethical. No, it is not worth it.”
He added: “Now the hunter is going to be the hunted. It is not worth it.”
He closed with a warning about the consequences of the publication, invoking a Yoruba proverb. “The Yorubas have a saying that if you have wickedness in two portions, you end up using one against yourself. For this publication, it is sad what the outcome will be.”
He continued: “Because when the EFCC is now investigating you for forging their logo and the name of their staff, that is bad. It won’t be good. So you should not have done it. It was not necessary.”
He ended by thanking those who had shown concern. “Once again, for all of you who have shown your kind and loving concern for me, you are great people, and I appreciate you.”
Ogunyannwo’s video follows a statement issued by ICMC and signed by its Vice President (Finance), Amb. V.A.A.A. Ojaide, setting out the Institute’s own account of the dispute.
In that statement, the Institute said the EFCC case “was never initiated by the Institute,” and that it came about through petitions written by law school students. It alleged that Ogunyannwo “had collected over N390,000,000 from over 3,000 law school students in 2023 and 2024 using the name of ICMC,” that it applied N20 million of its own funds to induct over 1,500 students on an understanding that he would remit induction fees and training commission, and that the undertaking was not honoured.
The Institute further said that a mediation involving the affected students collapsed after he left the process, and that the students then petitioned both the police and the Commission. It described the matter as raising ethical issues it could not overlook, while adding that it remains “passionately open to help him resolve these issues.”
The accounts given by both sides are their own, and neither has been tested in court. The authenticity of the notice at the centre of the dispute is itself now in issue, and the claim that the Commission has opened an investigation into the Institute for forgery and impersonation is, on the video’s own terms, an account of what Ogunyannwo says he was told rather than a confirmed position of the Commission.
