The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch, Abuja, continued its 2025 Annual Law Week with a compelling second panel session titled “Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Access to Justice and Effective Dispute Resolution: Prospects and Challenges for the Nigerian Legal System.”

Held under the broader Law Week theme, “Technology as a Catalyst for Justice: Bridging Gaps & Enhancing Access,” the session took place on Monday from 12:45 to 1:45 PM (West African Time), drawing legal professionals, tech experts, and policy advocates into a robust discourse on the intersection of law and innovation.

The session was chaired by Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb (UK), a former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch and an active voice in legal reform advocacy. In his opening remarks, Akangbe underscored the urgent need for the Nigerian legal system to embrace technology not as an option but as an imperative tool for bridging long-standing justice delivery gaps.

“From virtual hearings to digitized evidence management and AI-assisted research, the legal profession must evolve or risk irrelevance,” Akangbe stated, urging lawyers to move beyond token digitization to holistic adoption of innovation.

Panelists explored emerging trends in legal technology, including online dispute resolution platforms, smart contract applications, and blockchain-led case tracking. They also identified critical challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, judicial resistance to change, and the digital divide affecting rural litigants.

The session ended with a strong call for the judiciary, Bar, and relevant institutions to create collaborative frameworks that ensure technology enhances not replaces core legal values of fairness, equity, and access.

Akangbe’s leadership in the session was widely commended, with attendees praising his practical insights and longstanding commitment to legal excellence.
