A suspected fake lawyer who went by the name Ogbonnaya Kanu . was apprehended at the Choba Customary Court in Rivers State on Tuesday.

He was handed over to the police at Choba Area Command where he confessed to not being a legal practitioner.

According to sources, the police received the suspect from court officials after his presentation in court aroused suspicions about his identity. Further investigations revealed the man’s real name is Moses Obi Nwuju, alias Shadow.

Nwuju is said to hail from Amaku Mba Etche in Rivers State. Though he claimed to be a Chartered Accountant, it was uncovered that he is not a qualified lawyer despite parading himself as Ogbonnaya Kanu Esq.

The police say the suspect admitted he is currently pursuing a law degree with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). He had no license to practice law.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has been urged to follow up the case and ensure diligent prosecution of the suspect for impersonation and misleading the court.

The arrest comes amidst warnings by the NBA for Nigerians to beware of fake lawyers who engage in fraudulent activities. The association said it will continue working with law enforcement agencies to apprehend and bring such impostors to justice across the country.

Members of the public have also been advised to always verify the identity and qualifications of any individual claiming to be a lawyer to avoid falling victim to scams.
