The Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmon Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, has approved the introduction of a transitional period for the application of Order 4, Rule 15 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2024.

The new directive provides a 30-day window, from February 10, 2025, to March 12, 2025, for counsel and litigants involved in pending appeals to file for an extension of time, should they have missed previous deadlines. This period allows those affected to regularize their appeals and ensure compliance with the court’s new procedural rules.
At the end of the transitional period, no further applications for time extensions will be entertained, particularly for appeals where necessary steps have not been taken within the given timeframe. This means that parties who fail to file within the prescribed period will be barred by the provisions of Order 4, Rule 15 of the 2024 Supreme Court Rules.
Counsel and litigants are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to meet the requirements of the Rules. However, they are reminded that all applicable default fees remain in effect, and late filings will still incur the prescribed charges. Financial obligations tied to late submissions must be settled, regardless of the transitional period.
This adjustment is expected to streamline the filing process and ensure greater adherence to deadlines, as the Supreme Court continues to uphold its commitment to efficiency and transparency in its operations.
