Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations that mattresses and fans donated to Umaisha General Hospital in Toto Local Government Area were sold or could no longer be accounted for by officials of the facility.

The governor directed that a report on the matter be submitted before the end of the week after a viral video showed the lawmaker representing Umaisha/Ugya Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Sa’ad Abdullahi, questioning hospital officials over the whereabouts of items he said he personally purchased and donated to improve conditions at the hospital.
The donated items included 50 orthopaedic mattresses, more than 50 ceiling fans and more than 40 standing fans.
Abdullahi, a member of the All Progressives Congress, had returned to the hospital to assess the condition of the facility and determine how the items he donated were being used.
The visit, however, turned confrontational after officials were allegedly unable to satisfactorily account for the materials.
Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of eight new commissioners, special advisers, permanent secretaries and board members at the Aliyu Akwe-Doma Banquet Hall, Government House, Lafia, Governor Sule described the development as disturbing.
He said the lawmaker had donated the items because he was concerned about the condition of healthcare facilities serving his constituents, but alleged that some officials had subsequently disposed of them.
“A very honourable member from Umaisha/Ugya recently bought a lot of mattresses and all kinds of fans, standing fans, ceiling fans, and the rest of that because he was concerned about what his local primary healthcare was undergoing,” Sule said.
“Few days back, he returned there and discovered that the officials of the hospital had actually sold those items. This is a terrible thing that will happen if you have people who do not mean well for Nasarawa State.”
The governor said he was awaiting the outcome of the investigation and expected the relevant commissioner to submit a report before the weekend.
“I am waiting for the honourable commissioner, and I expect that report by the end of this week,” he said.
The allegation that the donated items were sold has not yet been established by the investigation ordered by the governor, and the material available does not identify any individual who has admitted selling the equipment.
In the viral footage, Abdullahi was seen questioning hospital personnel after apparently discovering that mattresses available at the facility did not correspond with those he said he had donated.
At one point, the lawmaker reminded an unidentified doctor of an earlier discussion about the orthopaedic mattresses.
“Doctor, do you remember the last time I spoke with you about those orthopaedic mattresses, do you remember what you told me?” he asked.
The doctor responded in the affirmative.
Abdullahi then turned to another male hospital employee who had apparently shown him one of the mattresses and questioned him about its origin.
“Do you know me? Do you realise I work under the state government? Please, for Allah’s sake, don’t let me be very upset with you,” the lawmaker said.
After the man confirmed that he knew him, Abdullahi challenged his explanation concerning the mattress.
“Why are you lying to me? How can you tell me this is the mattress I bought? Can I show you the mattresses I bought?” he asked while raising his mobile phone.
The visibly upset legislator then demanded an account of all the items he had donated.
“I bought them for my people. Where are the ceiling fans? I bought more than 50 ceiling fans, more than 40 standing fans. Where are they?” Abdullahi asked.
He also expressed concern about the condition of patients at the hospital and challenged officials to take him through the wards if the mattresses had actually been distributed there.
“Look at the condition of my people. You’re telling me you’ve taken the mattresses round the wards; take me to the wards. Where are they? Let me see them,” he said.
Abdullahi recalled an earlier conversation with a doctor who, according to him, had said the mattresses were still being kept in a store.
He said he had urged that they be brought out and used for patients rather than remain in storage.
“It is my money that I used to buy them for my people. Why will they be suffering? Look at the condition of the people here,” the lawmaker said.
The video showed patients in the facility, including a woman sitting beside another patient lying on a hospital bed, as the legislator questioned why donated equipment was apparently unavailable for their use.
During the exchange, however, a hospital employee offered an explanation concerning some of the missing mattresses.
The staff member said approximately seven of the 50 mattresses had been temporarily given to discharged patients, with an arrangement that they would subsequently be returned to the hospital.
That explanation did not account for all the items raised by the lawmaker, particularly the ceiling and standing fans, and it remains to be determined through the governor-ordered investigation what happened to the remaining donated materials.
The controversy has raised questions about accountability for equipment and supplies donated to public healthcare facilities and the systems used to record, deploy and safeguard such materials.
