Five legal practitioners have instituted a suit against the National Assembly at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging issues arising from the public hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on December 18, 2025, in respect of the Legal Practitioners Act (Amendment) Bill.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2797/2025, was filed by Yunus Opoola Murtala, Esq., and four others as plaintiffs against the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as defendant.

In a letter dated February 2, 2026, and addressed to the Clerk of the National Assembly, counsel to the plaintiffs, Amb. Hameed Ajibola Jimoh, Esq., formally notified the legislative body of the pendency of the suit.

“We write respectfully to formally notify the National Assembly that the said suit has been duly filed and is presently pending before a court of competent jurisdiction, though same is yet to be assigned to a particular court due to administrative processes at the Court Registry,” the letter stated.

According to the letter, the subject matter of the suit relates directly to the conduct of the public hearing held on December 18, 2025, and the constitutional implications thereof on the legislative process concerning the Legal Practitioners Act (Amendment) Bill.

“This correspondence is issued solely to place the National Assembly on formal notice of the pendency of judicial proceedings touching on the said Bill. It is not intended to impede the constitutional functions of the National Assembly nor to pre-empt the authority of the Honourable Court,” Amb. Jimoh stated.

The plaintiffs’ counsel disclosed that a copy of one of the processes filed in the suit — an affidavit of Non-Multiplicity of Actions — was attached to the letter as proof of filing and pendency of the suit.

“Kindly accept this letter as a record notice pending the determination of the suit by the Honourable Court,” the letter concluded.

The Legal Practitioners Act (Amendment) Bill has been a subject of intense debate within the legal community, with the Nigerian Bar Association and individual lawyers expressing various concerns about the proposed amendments and the manner in which the legislative process has been conducted.

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters held a public hearing on the bill on December 18, 2025, which the plaintiffs are now challenging in court.
