“The National Economic Council (NEC) Establishes Ad-hoc Committee to Address Petrol Subsidy Issues; Reviews Key Meeting Outcomes and Flood Relief Efforts”.

Mr. Olusola Abiola, the Director of Information at the Office of the Vice President, stated that this decision was made during the 135th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the committee is composed of prominent figures, including Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state, Gov. Hope Uzodinma, the Chairman of Progressives Governors Forum, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and Gov. Alex Otti of Abia state.

Abiola noted that the council also reviewed the ongoing distribution of essential items like rice, grains, and fertilizer to states, along with a N5 billion financial support provided by the Federal Government. He extended commendation to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their interventions.

Abiola highlighted the council’s observation of state governments’ various interventions and urged them to intensify the distribution of relief to alleviate citizens’ suffering, particularly among vulnerable groups.

He also mentioned that NEC expressed condolences for the loss of military personnel in Niger State, honoring their memory with a minute of silence and extending sympathies to their families.

Among other meeting highlights, Abiola shared financial data including Excess Crude Account balances, Stabilization Account figures, and Natural Resources Account balances for specific periods.

Recalling the 128th NEC meeting held on October 20, 2022, Abiola recounted how then Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, drew attention to the extensive damage caused by the 2022 flooding affecting approximately 31 states. This led to a significant loss of lives, displacement of millions of people, and substantial damage to houses and farmlands.

In response, the council resolved to establish a five-member Ad-hoc Committee on flooding, comprising Governors from Jigawa, Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Lagos, and Yobe States. Additionally, members from key ministries and agencies were included in the committee to address the flooding issue comprehensively.

Abiola clarified that the committee’s primary task was to evaluate the current flooding situation and develop a compensation framework for victims. The committee’s inaugural meeting took place on November 10, 2022, at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Secretariat.

One of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the acknowledgment of the urgency surrounding the assignment, prompting the sub-committee to propose strategies for addressing the imminent food crisis stemming from the flooding. This sub-committee, chaired by the governor of Kebbi State, included representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Humanitarian, Finance, NEMA, and the CBN.
