Justice Rita Offili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court in Abuja has imposed stringent bail conditions on an Abuja-based lawyer, Ahmed Abdulrahman, who is standing trial over allegations of cyberbullying a serving senator, Umar Shehu Buba.

Delivering a ruling on the bail application on Monday, Justice Offili-Ajumogobia ordered that Abdulrahman must produce two sureties who will stand for him throughout the duration of the trial.

She further directed that the two sureties must each own landed property in the Federal Capital Territory, with valid Certificates of Occupancy, and that the original copies of the documents be deposited with the registrar of the court.

In addition, both sureties are required to deposit their international passports with the court registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.

While granting the lawyer bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum, the judge ordered that he be kept in custody until he perfects the bail conditions.

Abdulrahman and four others are being prosecuted by the Inspector-General of Police on allegations bordering on cyberbullying Senator Umar Shehu Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/526/2025 and filed on October 6 by Anthony Egwu, the defendants — Abdulrahman, 41; Daure David, 35; Ishaq Muhammed, 25; Abdulrashid Musa, 30; and Nasir Abubakar, 21 — are listed as the 1st to 5th defendants respectively.

They were arraigned on October 30 on an 11-count charge bordering on cybercrime, defamation, advance fee fraud, and related offences. They all pleaded not guilty, and Justice Offili-Ajumogobia ordered their remand at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

In count one, the defendants were accused of conspiring in 2025 to commit cyberstalking against Senator Buba, an offence contrary to Section 27(1)(b) and punishable under Section 21(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 (as amended in 2024).

In count three, Abdulrahman was alleged to have intentionally circulated a video via his TikTok handle, “Kibanna Channel,” and on his YouTube channel, linking the senator to the sponsorship of banditry in order to tarnish his image.

He was alleged to have stated that “Senator Umar, a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a sponsor of banditry,” and called for his investigation — a statement the prosecution claims he knew to be false and capable of causing public disorder and instilling fear of death in the senator.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act (as amended) 2024.

One of the other defendants, Daure David, was also accused of attempting to obtain N5 million from Senator Buba under the false pretense that the money would be used to settle persons planning to protest against him.

The case has been adjourned to December 9, 2025, for further mention.
