Legal practitioner Stephen Azubuike has denounced the wave of criticism directed at lawyers following the recent Presidential Election Petition Tribunal verdict upholding Bola Tinubu’s victory. He contends blaming lawyers for dissatisfaction with the judgment is misguided.

In an analysis, Azubuike argues that picking on lawyers amounts to transfer of aggression against an innocent party. He states that lawyers merely utilize their skills to advance clients’ interests as mandated.

The lawyer points out that both winners and losers at the tribunal had legal representation. He asks whether critics excluded lawyers of their preferred candidates when denigrating the profession.

Azubuike highlights that lawyers are citizens who don’t constitute the judiciary or government. He explains that judges are appointed by politicians who control the executive and legislature.

While acknowledging flaws in Nigeria’s electoral process, Azubuike insists lawyers should not be scapegoats for perceived injustice by the courts. He reminds that lawyers collectively promote rule of law and have equal stakes in the nation as other professionals.

Azubuike concludes that suffocating lawyers and denying them breathing space is unjustified. He contends animosity and aggression towards the legal profession is unwarranted following disappointment with the tribunal’s verdict.

The perspective aims to spotlight the unjust targeting of lawyers in the aftermath of a controversial judgment. It makes a case against vilifying the profession based on judicial outcomes determined by wider political forces.
