*Warns Against Indefinite Detention Of Bawa, Emefiele

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section of Public Interest and Development Law, Monday Ubani has queried the propriety of the DSS engaging in the investigation of allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power against suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele and EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Ubani who spoke as a guest on Arise News Morning Show stated that by customary practice, it is the Police Force that is in the position to investigate the allegations the beleaguered public officers and not the DSS.

According to him, the DSS is a state service and strictly empowered to investigate threats to state and not mere breach of trust or infractions.

He further stressed the need for the rights of all Nigerians including persons under investigation to be respected by security agencies.

He frowned against the illegal detention of the CBN Boss and EFCC Chair stating that the Constitution frowns against elongated detention without trial.

He said, “That is the difference between us and the developed world. There, they complete their investigations before arresting a suspect and immediately after arrest they charge.

Here, we arrest first before start looking for evidence and sometimes use unorthodox means to extract evidence from suspects.”
