The Nigerian Army has acknowledged that the government led by President Bola Tinubu has yet to pay its personnel their August salaries and allowances.

In a memo issued on Monday, the army authorities urged soldiers to exercise patience, assuring them that efforts were underway to ensure prompt payment of their entitlements.

The memo, written in a concise military style, reads: “TEXT: LATE PMT OF SAL AND NON REG ALLCE AUG 24. DIR YOU INFO TPS THAT SAL AND NON REG ALLCE FOR AUG 24 IS YET TO BE PAID BY FGN. EFFORTS ARE ONGOING TO ENSURE PMT IS EFFECTED ASAP. TPS ARE REQ TO REMAIN PATIENT. PSE TREAT AS URGENT AND ACT.”

While delays in salary and bonus payments are not a new issue for the Nigerian Army, the situation has led to growing discontent among the ranks. In October 2022, soldiers lamented the delayed payments and the lack of salary increases over the past decade. An army Sergeant alleged that the authorities had impoverished lower-cadre personnel, with some enduring 12 years of stagnant pay. The sergeant affirmed that the lowest-ranking personnel in the army earn only around N50,000 per month.

Other soldiers corroborated these claims, stating that their monthly salaries were among the lowest in the security personnel, making it challenging to feed their families and relatives.

A Sergeant with 24 years of service reported receiving a monthly salary of N81,500, while police constables receive N84,000. Private soldiers are entitled to N50,000 per month, and warrant officers in the army get N92,000, compared to their colleagues in the Nigerian Civil Defence, who collect N96,000 monthly.
