The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, led by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, has discharged and acquitted 80 inmates at the Yolde-Pate Correctional Centre in Yola South Local Government Area as part of an ongoing review of cases across correctional facilities in the state.

The 80 persons released comprised 55 awaiting-trial inmates and 25 convicted inmates, many of whom were freed on medical and compassionate grounds after their cases were reviewed by the committee.

The committee also granted bail to 51 awaiting-trial inmates and convicted 69 others following consideration of their respective cases and pleas.

In addition, several inmates benefited from reductions in their sentences, particularly in cases arising from civil-related matters.

Some prison terms were reduced from 17 years to four years, six years to two years and five years to six months, among other adjustments made by the committee after reviewing the circumstances of the affected cases.

The exercise forms part of efforts by the Adamawa State judiciary to decongest correctional facilities, review prolonged detention and ensure that inmates whose circumstances justify release, bail or sentence adjustment receive appropriate judicial consideration.

Addressing the inmates after the exercise, Justice Abdulrahaman urged those who regained their freedom to avoid criminal activities and make productive use of the opportunity given to them.

She advised them to maintain good conduct, engage in lawful and productive ventures and avoid actions capable of returning them to custody.

The Chief Judge also encouraged inmates who remained in custody to maintain discipline and good behaviour while their cases or sentences continued.

She congratulated those released and urged others to accept their circumstances in good faith while awaiting the conclusion of their cases or eventual release.

The committee’s exercise involved a review of awaiting-trial cases as well as the circumstances of convicted inmates, including medical and humanitarian considerations.

According to the figures released, the Jail Delivery Committee has so far determined the cases of 237 inmates across the correctional facilities covered by the ongoing exercise.
