A middle-aged man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife just four days after she gave birth, in an incident that has triggered public outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence in Nigeria.

The suspect, whose identity has yet to be officially disclosed, was said to have beaten his wife until she lost consciousness in the presence of their newborn baby and her mother. The incident reportedly occurred in Lagos.

Nollywood actress and activist, Omosalewa Fafowora, who first brought the case to public attention via her X (formerly Twitter) account @0m0salewa, alleged that the man and his sister initially denied police access to the house, leaving the newborn child crying outside helplessly.

In a video clip shared online, officers from the Nigeria Police Force were seen forcing their way into the residence to apprehend the suspect. The visibly shaken man was handcuffed and questioned at the scene.

“News just got to me that this man brutally assaulted his wife who just gave birth four days ago,” Omosalewa wrote. “He beat her until she passed out. She is currently in critical condition and receiving emergency medical care.”

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to having an “issue” with his wife but did not elaborate on the motive for the attack. The police officers informed him that his wife was unconscious and on oxygen support at the hospital.

The video also captured moments when officers slapped the suspect while handcuffing him, underscoring the emotional response of the arresting team.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many calling for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of the suspect.

“This case must not end here,” Omosalewa demanded, urging authorities to take decisive action to ensure justice for the victim.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for official comments were unsuccessful as he was said to be in a meeting at the time.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency told newsmen that the agency had not been informed of the incident as of press time.
