*As Senator Cyril Fasuyi Claims Akpoti-Uduaghan Previously Accused Ex-Governor Fayemi of Sexual Harassment

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct commenced its disciplinary probe on Wednesday into the alleged refusal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to comply with Senate rules. However, the Kogi Central lawmaker was not present at the hearing.

Committee Chairman, Senator Neda Imaseun, expressed disappointment over her absence after waiting for an hour. “We waited, and unfortunately, she is not here. I hope that before we conclude this procedure, she will join us,” he stated.

Imaseun reaffirmed that the committee was acting within its mandate, explaining that the Senate Spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, had officially brought the matter before the Senate on February 25, leading to its referral to the Ethics Committee. The committee was given two weeks to present its findings.

The probe follows a recent seating dispute in the Senate that escalated into a heated exchange between Senator Natasha and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Natasha subsequently accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, an allegation he has strongly denied.

Meanwhile, Cyril Fasuyi, the senator representing Ekiti North, claimed that this was not the first time Natasha had made such allegations. Fasuyi alleged that she previously accused former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi of sexual harassment.

His remarks came shortly after Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted her formal petition against Akpabio. Some All Progressives Congress (APC) senators urged Akpabio to dismiss the petition, citing Senate rules that prohibit lawmakers from submitting petitions they personally authored.

Fasuyi further stated that Fayemi intends to file his own petition against Natasha in response to her past allegation.

The controversy intensified during the Senate session, as opposition senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attempted to shout down Fasuyi when he made the claims against Natasha.

A visibly enraged Akpoti-Uduaghan stood up and protested, declaring, “I am being judged harshly.”

The chamber briefly descended into chaos, but Senate President Akpabio ultimately ruled that Natasha’s petition would be allowed to stand, despite objections from some APC lawmakers.
