Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has refuted claims that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP/Kogi Central) was suspended over her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement on Saturday, Bamidele asserted that the six-month suspension was strictly due to misconduct and violation of Senate rules, not the allegations against Akpabio.

“The Senate firmly rebuts the misinformation being circulated. Senator Uduaghan was suspended solely for her persistent misconduct, disregard for Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended), and gross indiscipline—nothing more, nothing less,” the statement read.

Bamidele emphasized that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s failure to follow proper procedures prevented the Senate from addressing her petition on its merits.

The Kogi senator’s dispute with Akpabio began in February when she refused to sit in her assigned seat. She later made allegations of sexual misconduct against the Senate President in a televised interview. On March 6, she was suspended for six months, and her security details were withdrawn.

Bamidele clarified that her suspension was based on a report from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, which found her guilty of violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Rules. Her offenses included defying seating arrangements, speaking without recognition, making disrespectful remarks, and refusing to comply with a committee summons.

“These actions directly challenged the authority of the Senate and warranted disciplinary measures to restore order and uphold the institution’s integrity,” Bamidele stated.
