Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has clarified his earlier remarks regarding former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi needing security clearance before visiting the state, insisting the directive is strictly about security protocol, not political rivalry.

In a statement released Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor emphasised his constitutional duty as Chief Security Officer of Edo to safeguard lives and property. Okpebholo explained that the security measures for high-profile visitors or events are necessary to protect both guests and residents.

The clarification follows Okpebholo’s remarks at a defection rally in Uromi, where he warned Obi against entering Edo without proper security arrangements, citing the state’s recent surge in kidnappings and attacks on clergy as reasons for heightened vigilance.

“We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit,” the statement said.

The governor also drew on biblical wisdom from Matthew 6:2-4, encouraging discreetness in good deeds to avoid unnecessary attention, linking it to today’s volatile security environment.

Addressing critics, Okpebholo cautioned against politicising the security directive. “We will not fold our arms while politically motivated actions endanger lives,” the statement added.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and described the protocols as a mark of responsible governance rather than hostility.

“The governor respects Mr Peter Obi and all political figures contributing to Nigeria’s democracy. However, respect for official procedure must remain a constant,” the statement concluded.
