In a surprising turn of events, the Rivers State Government has taken the drastic step of shutting down the operations of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM in Port Harcourt.

This decision comes amidst an ongoing land dispute between the state government and Daar Communications, Plc., the parent company of AIT and Raypower FM.

According to reports from the media organization’s website, the shutdown was executed by telecommunications engineers who had been contracted by the state government, and they were accompanied by armed security operatives during the operation. The engineers were seen disconnecting the wave guard from the antenna on the broadcasting mast, while riggers were observed dismantling the mast itself.

Furthermore, the state government deployed bulldozers to the DAAR Communications PLC Broadcast Centre in Port Harcourt, where they initiated the demolition of the Transmitter Complex. These actions have left the management of the media company in shock, as they had been actively engaged in efforts to resolve the land dispute with the state government through amicable means.

The abrupt shutdown and demolition have raised concerns and questions about the state government’s handling of the situation. Some officials from the telecommunications contracting company revealed that they had received instructions from higher authorities to commence the demolition process on a Sunday, even in the face of heavy rainfall.

The ongoing dispute over the land on which the AIT/RayPower Radio station’s transmission station was built has been a contentious issue between the state government and Daar Communications, Plc., as previously reported by PUNCH in March. The sudden and forceful shutdown of operations has added a new layer of complexity to this already contentious matter.
