The Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike has been appointed a Life Bencher, TNL had learnt.
The ceremony of his appointment took place at the Supreme Court Complex, Abuja, today, the 24th day of January, 2019.
The Former Acting Minister of Education under the Good luck Jonathan led-administration was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1998, as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, before he was elected as the Governor of the Oil Producing State.
The appointment, therefore, implies that the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike is now among those qualified to sponsor aspirants to the bar.
A life membership of the Body is usually conferred on a legal practitioner such as Nyesom Wike, by the Body.
Apart from the Chief Justice of Nigeria who is a Statutory Life Bencher, every other person becomes one when appointed.
For practicing lawyers, when conferred with Life membership of the Body, the same will have the exclusive tight to sit in the inner bar, and also mention his or her motion out of turn on the cause list. Upon voluntary resignation, the same becomes a Supernumerary Member of the Body.
The Body of Benchers are by Law responsible for the formal call to bar of persons seeking to be legal practitioners. It is the responsibility of the Body to also among others, discipline such aspirants when found wanting.
