The Rivers State Election Tribunal, seated in Abuja, has upheld the election and mandate of former Rivers State Deputy Governor, Banigo Harry, as the senator representing Rivers West senatorial district.

The Tribunal dismissed the petition submitted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate, Asita Honourable, on the grounds of lacking merit.

Asita Honourable, a former chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), contested the election against Banigo Harry, who ran under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Asita’s challenge was based on his claim that Harry failed to secure the required number of valid votes.

Asita sought the court to nullify the February 25 election that led to Harry’s victory and declare himself as the rightful winner of the Rivers West Senatorial District.

However, the Tribunal ruled that Asita Honourable was unable to substantiate his argument that Banigo Harry did not secure a majority of lawful votes. Additionally, Asita failed to provide a comprehensive vote tally that demonstrated his own vote count surpassing that of Banigo Harry.

In reaching its verdict, the Tribunal emphasized that Asita did not provide sufficient evidence to undermine the legitimacy of Banigo Harry’s electoral victory.
