The Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry, established to investigate the recent spate of killings, arson, looting, and destruction of local government headquarters in the state, has begun its work.

The 7-member panel, set up by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, kicked off its investigation yesterday with visits to some of the affected local government areas (LGAs) for on-the-spot assessment.
The commission, which was given a one-month deadline to deliver its findings following its inauguration by the state government, toured five affected LGAs, including Eleme, Ikwerre, Emohua, Obio/Akpor, and Khana. The secretariats in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua were reportedly burnt with explosives on October 7, 2024, just two days after the local government elections in the state. Obio/Akpor and Khana LGAs also suffered significant property damage and looting.
During the visit, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, stated that the purpose of the tour was to assess the extent of the damage and engage with security agencies and council leadership to gather comprehensive information about the incidents. He acknowledged that the panel had received several memoranda and pledged the commission’s commitment to approaching its task with thoroughness, transparency, fairness, and diligence.
The commission’s investigation comes in the wake of a troubling surge in violence and destruction targeting local government institutions in Rivers State. The findings of the inquiry are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these incidents and provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
